James McCarthy

Artist Statement:

I am originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan. I was born in 1956. I was the first generation of TV kids. I liked science fiction and fantasy and I also liked to draw. I drew the usual boy stuff: monsters, aliens and spaceships, comic strips, etc. My father was an artist and he influenced me as well. Another thing they had in Michigan was seasons. I loved the seasons, especially the cold and weird beauty of winter. My family moved to Florida in 1965 where (aside from several trips to Michigan, Arkansas, Pennsylvania and New England) I have remained ever since. I miss the seasons, especially winter snow. As a teenager I really grew to love music. Especially music that forms landscapes inside your head, such as prog rock, classical, mediaeval music and later in the '90's as an adult, new age music. Music is my primary source of inspiration when I conjure up ideas for my drawings and paintings. My theme is Surrealism and the Landscape. I like to create surreal biomorphic images but depicting the landscape along with the seasons is important to me as well.

I support and promote the cause of regenerative medicine and stem cell research with my art. To see more follow me on facebook!
